When I first posted this, I labeled it as an Impala but fellow 365er @lynnilou pointed out that's it's actually another large antelope called the Waterbuck. He has the tell-tail white marking on his rear end.
The males grow long, slender lyre-shaped horns with strong ridges. The arch-like structure helps the animal interlock horns to throw off it's opponent and also protects the cranium from damage. They are prey animals for several carnivores, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, Cape hunting dogs, spotted hyenas, crocodiles and pythons.
We just returned home from Africa this evening after traveling for more than 30 hours. Day and night have been turned upside down. I'm tired and wired at the same time. But since I'm still a week behind in posting, I'll continue sharing pics from the trip to complete my album. I may share them into November since I have several thousand, many of which I haven't even seen yet.
