Feb. 6. My first tulip popped open this morning! It's a feathery red and yellow beauty. I have an annual ritual of selecting the bulbs, placing the order in August, then waiting for the bulbs to arrive from Washington in December. Then it takes about 8 weeks for them to bloom--usually for several weeks in February. My garden looks fantastic--for those three weeks! But then they die and after that, the yard is sadly devoid of color... This year I hope to plant something new right away once they're gone.
Oh, what a gorgeous tulip!! Love the colors (of course!), and the fringe edges!! They are so beautiful when they bloom, but sadly they don't last long enough...I have been checking out dahlias to plant in my front yard amongst the roses. They last a lot longer, and they do come back year after year in our climate.... just a thought!
Southern California last week.
