This is the most popular market in Yangon ((formerly Rangoon). Built in 1926, it houses more than 1,600 shops selling just about anything you might want including fresh produce, spices, meat, fish, chicken legs, handicrafts, wood carvings, lacquerware, fabrics, clothing, food and quality gems such as rubies, sapphires and jade.
The shoppers walking by are dressed in traditional longyi, a sarong- like tube of fabric worn by both men and women. The colorful longyis, which come in plaids, stripes and mixed patterns, are tied on the side by women and in a front knot by the men. We each bought ourselves a colorful "skirt" on our final day in Yangon. They are still neatly folded in a pile of souvenirs- not sure if they will actually be worn or just admired. But I'm thinking that the beautiful ruby earrings from that same shopping trip, now tucked away in a tiny velvet box, will be seen for the first time on my New Year's Eve dinner date.
So wonderful....I believe I spent some time in that market, too! I came back with a small ruby ring that I have not worn in quite a while! I am sure you will look stunning with your ruby earrings! This photo really conveys the hustle and bustle of those places, and the way the market spills out onto the sidewalks. So much wonderful color here...FAV!
