There was some difficulty in identifying the dragonfly in the image I posted two days ago but I think everyone will agree that this one is an Eastern Amberwing (http://bugguide.net/node/view/8058).
This time I went to manual focus at 250mm; the camera had a hard time figuring out this was what I wanted. The subject is perched on a Knockout Rose bud (http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/knock-out-rose/p/26903/) that happens to be undamaged by the Japanese beetles still buzzing around the garden…
Cropped and name added, but no filters or other coloring edits.
@annbo Since I had a reasonable shot from two days earlier, I was more patient to get greater detail, otherwise I wouldn't have posted another dragonfly… Thank you for the fav!
I can't capture a dragonfly to save my life (never mind a blurred one) so it's nice to see other peoples shots, and this one is stunning! Amazing details and a beautiful shot! Fav! :-)
@rhos Aww, thank you, Ann, for the fav and the "WOW"!
@sitiodown Thank you, Tari. Being in the right place at the right time with the right lens mounted and shooting until s/he left!
@sparkleplenty1 Thanks so much, Joyce. I've had fewer-than-a-handful make PP, but the butterfly is still there and I've definitely never had two at the same time! And to think I thought about making May 31 my last day...
@digitalrn The "amberwing" is certainly well-named, isn't it!
@allisonrap Persistence, determination and a little bit of luck are all essential if you're not going to find a spot they frequent and execute a "stake-out"! My current quest is for a bumblebee in flight. You haven't seen one posted yet but I've trashed hundreds of frames already looking for the one the won't embarrass me!
@rhoing I had to look up that saying 'tilting at windmills' - never heard it before! Ha - you learn something new every day. We purchased a new house which has taken all my free time - cottage time is in short supply right now - so my nature shots are in low supply right now.
@allisonrap A suggestion. There is a YouTube video of a dragonfly · http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzkdsEbNLk0 · and I left a comment. "Bill" responded with: "They seem to watch for a passing insect, go out to get it, and then come back to the same spot." So perhaps this may be a trick when you have a bit of time to stay in a single spot and observe?
Boy, I sure didn't follow through on all comments from this post! @catwhiskers Thank you, Nan! @tooki Thank you, Tooki! Ah, yes: retirement! Rowing and taking pictures: what fun that will be! @tbats22 Thank you, Tiara — though you're not posting any more :( @cmc1200 Thank you, Caryn! @furrylens Thanks so much, E²! (One of these days I *will* memorize the code for the superscripted 2!) @chrismarfil Thanks, Chris!
@espyetta Always tomorrow, indeed!
