“Dressed for summer”

’Tis that time of year to brace for the long summer days of high temperatures and direct sunlight, so the campus greenhouse — http://www.plantbiology.siu.edu/facilities/plant-biology-facilities/greenhouse/index.php — has received its “light diffusion” treatment to reduce the damaging effects of the hot summer [mid-day] sun.

Update. There are specialty latex paints to produce this effect. The “latex” properties will [apparently] hold up through repeated rains and will break down with the first frost and then be washed away. Kind of cool.

One year ago (“It was a 6-frame day and 3 were of a squirrel…”): http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2012-05-17
Two years ago (“Japanese iris”): http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2011-05-17

Note 1 » This week I have taken some shots of two years ago’s “Japanese iris.” I don’t think two years ago’s “Japanese iris” is actually a “Japanese iris.” My better guess now is Iris virginica (Iridaceae); see some images at PhytoImages’ species page for Iris virginica, http://phytoimages.siu.edu/cgi-bin/dol/dol_terminal.pl?taxon_name=Iris_virginica&rank=binomial

Note 2 »» And it's not a Japanese iris, either, but rather Siberian iris, “Iris sibirica,” http://phytoimages.siu.edu/cgi-bin/dol/dol_terminal.pl?taxon_name=Iris_sibirica&rank=binomial
Even with the protection it gets mighty warm in there.
