On the injured/disabled list

Our 21-foot rowing shell had an altercation last week with our garage door. As you might guess, the garage door “won.” It may not be terribly visible, but the hull is cracked all the way around its U-shape (above the left-most of the holes for the hand-grip of the crutch). I’ve rigged a crutch we had from Clare’s broken toe a few years ago to keep the hull as secure-to-the-deck as possible and I am off to learn whether or not it can be fixed and if so, how much $$$…

Can be fixed by a good fiberglass repair place. Too bad you don't live closer, my husband does that sort of stuff.

@sailingmusic The shop that has it was recommended by another sculler I know. The first thing that both repair guys noticed is that the deck doesn't detach from the hull. So if you don't cut away the deck, you can't work from the inside (if that matters). My guy said it looked like "25 hours of glassing." Kuh-ching. But it's still less money than a new-used shell!

Oh boy, that hurts. Hopefully it can be salvaged with not too much pain

Ingenious idea, splinting this injured craft with a retired crutch. I do hope repairs can be successfully made, and without costing an arm and a leg.

Thank you very much for the comment shared on my FanFare dandelion image as well as the plug for IL's blessed profusion of puffy weeds. I enjoyed reading your personal intro and must say I'm impressed and encouraged by your four years of devotion to this 365 project. In the few months I've been involved it has certainly opened my eyes in a new and different way. I've always thought myself on the hunt for a photo opportunity but now, it's really serious!

@lyndemc I have obviously been on a bug-and-plant "kick" for quite some time. But in both cases, there is a reason. The bugs were motivated by wanting to know *what* was in my garden and learn to distinguish between true "pests" and "beneficials." The plants-and-flowers are supported by having a greenhouse on campus and the somewhat scholarly pursuit of contributing to the online repository of plant images ( http://phytoimages.siu.edu/cgi-bin/dol/dol_owner.pl?owner=Mitchell)…
