Picus viridis

I went out for a stroll this afternoon and thought I'd heard the yaffle of a green woodpecker in the trees but didn't expect to see it. I was delighted when I spotted a yellow flash swoop across a field as I walked back, and even more delighted when he (this one is a male) landed on a fence post for several minutes). Unfortunately, he landed on the other side of the field so I had to use maximum zoom and didn't get the clearest of shots, but I'm so pleased to have take a photo at all, I don't mind that it's not the best quality.
Great spot - have never seen one of these though the spotted ones are quite common in the garden

What great luck, nice shot, you have managed to show his colouring well. I've only ever seen the spotted one.

Wow Louise. How lucky. I have problems seeing a woodpecker let alone photographing one. I hear them often. Fantastic shot.

Great shot. Love woodpeckers. We looked out of our window a few months ago and one of these was walking around on our neighbours lawn. Slightly odd in the middle of Birmingham but very nice to see.

I've never seen this type of bird before! I'd rather have this shot not in the best quality over not seeing this bird! Such an interesting bird and a great spot and capture! x
