I went moth trapping and caught loads of these and so many other kinds of moth too. It's sitting on my finger, moths are quite easy to hold once they're settled, they will just crawl on to you finger if you put it just under their legs. It was impossible to get an in focus shot due to the winds quivering, but this one is reasonable. It was a good night, I was out from about 9 to half past midnight. Other moth species seen included:
Silver Y, Gold Y, Peppered, Ghost, burnished brass, Flame, Flame shoulder, Angle shades, Map wing, Purple clay, Buff arches, Dark arches, Brimstone, Green carpet, Yellow underwing, Confused, Antler, Pug, Heart and dart, Rivulet, Wave and many more!
Wow you did really well! Moth trapping was one of my favourite things I did when I was at university many years ago. Not done it since, but I remember it so well.
Awesome Louise! I have a friend who traps moths in her garden and has just built herself a new mouth lamp. She has caught some real beauties and this was one of them. Such a pretty moth.
Good capture, lots of detail. Sounds like an amazing night, didn't know moth trapping existed. What a lot of different types you saw. I actually saw a huge moth, I presumed, fluttering outside my window at a honeysuckle the other evening. I couodnt believe how big it was and no camera to hand although a shot would have been hard to get.
A beautiful insect. Just read up a bit on what moth trapping actually is; I was pretty sure you wouldn't be doing anything to harm the moths so wasn't too worried, and this was confirmed by what I read.
@tristansmum it was part of a survey done by an expert - it's just using a light to attract them and they perch on sheets or old egg boxes put out for them. They're free to fly away as they please!
