Dinner in a favourite local pub this evening before going to the cinema to see The Imitation Game (which was very good!).
The man in the photo was known as Tom Dooley. He was a tramp who lived nearby in a shack on the edge of a country lane when I was a child... a local character. I understand he was actually quite a wealthy man but following a shrapnel injury in the war, chose to abandon his home and family and become a tramp. He died quite a few years ago and his shack no longer stands but he fascinated me throughout my childhood and I love that the pub 'honours' him with a few photos!
@dizzyd I don't know... I believe he chose to abandon any family he had so I imagine he lost touch with them. I don't know if he was a local man or came to the area when he became a tramp and I've never heard of any known family for him, but I don't know a great deal about him, only what I was told as a child.
