Great spotted woodpecker
This one is a male, which you can tell by the red on the back of his head (females don't have that red bit). I saw him on the pole and had time to fetch the camera and take two shots before he flew on!

We have three in the UK - Great Spotted, Lesser Spotted and Green. This one is the most common species.

interesting, thanks. We mostly see the downy, and very very rarely a pileated and a lot of flickers.
