I spent a couple of hours with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust this afternoon, helping to rebuild the giant head hibernaculum in the outdoor classroom at Carsington Water. I couldn't spare a lot of time but even a couple of hours helps. You can see what the head looked like at the end of the second day of work when the others had finished it in this blog post :

That is a fascinating looking structure by the end of the blog post. Never heard that term used before so I had to try to satisfy my curiosity but still not sure. Is it to give some animals an escape from winter weather?

@pandorasecho It's just means somewhere to hide for winter - somewhere to hibernate for those creatures that do, or a place to shelter for others.
