I was supposed to be doing things at the house today, but something else came up and I ended up in Chesterfield, home to the famous crooked spire which I have loved since I was a little girl! The spire leans over by 9 feet and 5 inches and there are 32 tons of lead on it. There are a few variations of the story of how it got the twist, generally involving the devil, but in truth it was built of green wood and so twisted as the wood dried, under the weight of all that lead.
We used to go through Chesterfield a lot when our daughter lived at Worksop for a while..everytime you just have look for that spire..bit like the winking man on the Roaches,!
I've been once in Chesterfield and I also of course took a picture of the twisted spire.
