A fire began this afternoon in the woodlands where I was working on Tuesday, a little further along from where my photo was taken. It can't have been natural so either someone started it deliberately (it's happened here before) or someone has ignored all the high fire risk warnings and been careless. The fire spread and spread, on to the moorland behind the rocks and is still very much ablaze, with Derbyshire and Staffordshire fire crews on site.
Devastating for the wildlife up there, the moorland will recover of course but the trees will not - well, not quickly.
There's some good drone footage from yesterday on youtube of this beautiful landscape burning.
Oh now this is awful .... there was a large field fire a couple from our town 2 weeks ago .....
Hope Derbyshire has had some of the rain we have had in the last 24 hours.
Happy Birthday as well Louise
@dizzyd Thanks. We had an hour of heavy rain this afternoon but that was all. It has helped the fire crews a bit though and they've reduced from 85 firefighters to 55 this evening thanks to the rain, but it's not as easy fire to tackle so I expect it'll be burning for days ::(
@houser934 It wasn't the whole wood but it will have a big impact. The fire is still burning on the moors so I've no idea yet how bad the tree damage and I've heard conflicting reports, some saying it was mostly the lower level shrubs that burnt in the wood and others saying the trees have been devastated... will have to wait and see what it's like when the fire service are done and the area is open for access again.
