A Gray Hairstreak, Strymon melinus, showing the false antennae and eye spots on the hind wings. The idea being a predator won't know which end to attack affording the butterfly a chance at escape.
PS Thanks for the kitten web link. I have been helping the kitten with elimination already but I need to start 'washing' her like Mum would too! She seems a lot better tonight so fingers crossed.
