I've only ever seen a reed bunting once and that was a few days ago but I didn't manage to get a photo. However, today after lots of disappointments which I'll tell you about in a minute, this little chap decided to preen himself and sat there for ages resulting in lots of pics. We left home at 9 am to go to stay with our friends in Eastbourne for the weekend. When we hit the M25 at South Mimms, we sat is a queue of traffic for about 7 miles and this took 2.5 hours! By this time, Steve was totally fed up and we came off at the A10 and drove back home. We phoned our friends and later found out that the tailbacks were 20 miles long due to a chemical spillage. It would be the one time when we decided to go and visit them! We went back to the services at South Mimms and had something to eat because by this time it was about 1.15 and we were hungry. Then we came back home amongst the showers but all was not lost when I walked down Wood Lane to capture a few bird pics which I hope you will like.
Thanks for all the recent Favs and comments - it really is much appreciated but forgive me if I don't answer every one.
Are you sure this is a blackcap? To be honest I think this is a tree sparrow (Passer montanus) because of the plumage and completely different beak (typical for a finch rather than a type of warbler).
This doesn't take away from the capture, though! You made good use of the time this little guy spent preening. :)
Nice capture this looks more like a Reed Bunting to me, male Black dirty grey above and light olive grey below with black crown hope that help with id of a Blackcap?
@xtrmntr2k Oliver I have been reliably informed from people on Beds Birds that this is a reed bunting. @esox Thanks Martin - Beds Birds say that this is a reed bunting too so we'll go with that
