This is not a terribly good pic but until 2 weeks ago, I hadn't even seen a kingfisher and since then I've watched in awe as he flew along the brook. Today I changed my mind about where I was going to walk as there were a lot of children playing where I wanted to go and get some pics so I knew that would be a waste of time. Instead, I started walking along the cycle track and thought I would walk a short way along as my ankle is giving me a lot of pain (arthritis). I then decided that I would walk along the brook as it was fairly shady in places and it's been quite hot today again. Then to my amazement, I noticed a bird in the tree and knew that it wasn't anything common - wow it's a kingfisher I thought and proceeded to take some pics from afar so that I wouldn't frighten him and gradually creeping slowly towards him while stopping to take some more pics. As I got within about 25ft from him, he flew off. This one although taken from further away, actually turned out to be one of the best. I kept having to change exposure which is why I was fiddling about and taking so long to get any decent pics but I think this one (although far from brilliant) shows the kingfisher's unique profile with his long fishing beak!
Thanks to everyone for getting my heron and robin both on PP at the same time. Your comments and Favs are always much appreciated and it gives me such a thrill to know that some of my pics have made PP
Oh fabulous - so hard to spot when they're in a tree and then when you do really difficult not to gasp really loudly and frighten them off (well it is for me!)
I agree with Pam, Kingfishers are wonderful and i am always happy when i can get any photo of birds...i figure the practice will help be get that fabulous shot one day. This is good, and i'm glad you posted!
