I have had a wonderful afternoon and I got paid for it! We had our work's AGM at Holme Mills which is owned by the Jordan family and has been in the family since 1855. We started with a tour of the mill and of course, I took my camera. It also gave me a chance to use my small lens which I don't often use. The main pic in this collage is of the machinery which powers the milling process. Top right is the big wheel and the "teeth" of the wheel are made of wood and have to be changed every 6 weeks! Middle right is a mouse that was sitting on the window sill (they seem to be placed strategically throughout the building). Bottom right is at the top of the mill where the grain starts off. Middle pic at the bottom is self explanatory and the shot on the left is some sort of Victorian equipment which I didn't catch the name of because I was too busy taking pics - LOL!
At one time there were 400 mills in Bedfordshire and now there are only 4. This mill is still in use making flour which you can buy in the shop. While I was there I bought some porridge and some breakfast cereals which Jordan's are famous for. They export all over the world and I was fascinated to hear that France buys 25% of the breakfast cereal containing dark chocolate.
After the tour, we were treated to tea and cakes which had been made at the mill and they were scrummy. If you ever want an afternoon out, go to the mill which is just outside Biggleswade near a little village called Broom. It is a really nice place to visit and has a new visitor centre which has been built using some money from the Greensands Ridge project which BRCC (the charity I work for) runs. Bill Jordan is a Patron of our charity.
