The Canterbury Tales

Today's shot is of the opening lines to Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which begins with April's showers.

Written around forty years after the Black Death ravaged Europe and Asia, and six years after the Peasants' Revolt, it is an entertaining poem about a group of pilgrims from different backgrounds, who are invited to entertain the others by telling a tale. The descriptions of the pilgrims are full of sly humour, and the tales contain religious and moral themes, as well as some memorably earthy humour.
