Uppark

This is Uppark, a National Trust property dating from the late 17th century. It caught fire in 1989, and re-opened in 1995 after being completely restored. The writer HG Wells' parents met while working at Uppark. His mother was a lady's maid who later became the housekeeper, and his father was a gardener. Having access to the library, and his observations of social hierarchy, perhaps influenced his writing.
