Last week I walked the Oromahoe to Paihia traverse and along the side of the track were several of these twisted trees about 2 - 3 meters high. I decided when they were saplings they were tied in a knot to act as markers for bush workers or trappers and left that way.
I liked how the little branches were confused and turned to grow towards the light.
