Sadly the tracks closed as soon as I returned to base camp in Opua after 250km. It means I need to fly home, and reassess my next move. 10 days rest, ohh so needed to rest and repair in the arms of family.
Oh my gosh, the challenge of walking 3 days on the beach. Then, walk Raetea Forest across the island and then into Waitangi. Love NZ bush. So challenging!
I'm in awe, and disappointed for you. Hope you had fun doing parts you did, who says has to be non-stop?? Enjoy family hugs ( and oven cooked meals!) X
Such a shame you had to stop your walk, but I am sure you will get back to it. I think it is a good idea to do the South Island and then get back later. The house in your photo (on the point opposite) is very familiar to me as it was owned by family friends until a few months ago. It was originally built by Terry Sinclair the notorious drug baron - and it actually does have a tunnel that goes from inside a cupboard in the house to the beach!

My apologies for the block response for your wonderful support. Level 3 lockdown has lifted now and the drama to get a flight into a level 2 location and continue for me was a logistic challenge. I could travel to return home but getting to the trail from there continues. I arrived home today and will get back on the track next week. So the long walk continues with detours.
@dkbarnett Delwyn YES! Mr Asia's house, and was sold very recently and has had a paint job face lift. My sister looks at it every day and I have enjoyed her beautiful garden and that view, developed over 25 years, for a week of rest. What a lovely connection to those bad days in the 80's. (was it the 80's?) Before your friends owned the property it was run down, so glad to hear about the tunnel and it is real.
