Tom and Saler two day-hikers arrived just on dark and all five of us had a good hut night. The next morning, we headed out late at 8:45, and onto the steep descent. Walking as a group but each doing our own thing chatting in our twos and threes. Steep rocky drops followed a fence up and over the bluff. This challenging section descended 950m to the Timaru River Rd, initially along the ridgeline to a small saddle and then down a steep face on a zig-zagging track.
Nick and Ginny were keen to get to a bakery at Hawea and stay in Albert town so Tom, Saler and me found the lake, stripped off and jumped into the cold Lake Hawea. Great for the tired calf muscles. Tom and Saler drove me to Wanaka, passing fields of sunflowers and to my cabin for the night for which I was most grateful for the lift.
