I took my camera with me to church to capture this decoration of the high altar of the Parish Church dedicated to Our lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Sliema. My wife and I frequent this church. I considered that this solemn decoration would make a nice picture.
According to Christian ritual, Lent is a 40 day period before Good Friday and Easter when the faithful are expected to take some time off and think of the mystery of salvation and also make a mental survey of the life they are living in relation to their beliefs. It is also a time when they, of their own free will, make some sacrifice/s whether big or small, such as going without their favourite sweets or making charitable donations.
I've never been an overly religious person, but I've always loved the exquisite detail you can find in churches -- especially ones like you've captured. This photo really is best viewed and full size!
Thanks. With regard to the church itself, Christine, there is an abundance of catholic churches spread around towns and villages in Malta. Compared to other churches this church is mediocre especially relating to artistic paintings and stone carvings as well marble works and church treasures.
And thank you so much for sharing this information. I´m not religious myself but I find it very interesting and always love to learn new things :-D
