I saw this beautiful very well kept example of the magnificent Volgwagen Beetle, which has such a long story of success, while walking along the Gzira promenade. Though I am not a connoisseur in this subject (my interest in cars is to drive to my destination without trouble) I immediately realised that I was looking at a car more than 40 years old – in fact this model was manufactured between 1962 and 1966. This Volkswagen Beetle model enjoyed a winning combination of clever advertising and several years of what seemed like annual model changes – some very insignificant. At a time when in the US promotion was for "longer, lower, and wider" cars Volkswagen promoted the 1962 Volkswagen Beetle by asking buyers to "Think small." Volkswagen celebrated a milestone in 1964, as Beetle number 10 million was built. After a lapse of some years Volkswagen have recently launched a new version of this great car.
The Beetle was a hell of a car and the original bug has a much wider history than the one you mentioned. "The Volkswagen Type 1, widely known as the Volkswagen Beetle, is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003."
