THIRD LARGEST IN THE WORLD (I)

The Mosta Parish Church, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady (commonly known as the Rotunda) boasts to be the third-largest unsupported church dome in the world. It was built in the 19th century on designs by the Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse` (no relative of mine even if his name is the same as my surname). Grognet’s plans were based on the Pantheon in Rome. On 9th April, 1942, during a bombing raid by the German Luftwaffe a bomb weighing 200Kg pierced the dome (2 others bounced off) and fell among the congregation of more than 300 people. Luckily it did not explode – a replica of this bomb is displayed inside the church under the words ‘Il-miraklu tal-bomba’ (English – ‘The Bomb Miracle’)
I think God was looking after everyone in the congregation in 1942! It's an impressive building and looks just like the Pantheon

@jenrobcarr @chamal @mrssmith @colababy @bill_d @jpgiorgio Thanks. Your comments are very much appreciated. Yes, Jennifer, I agree that God was with them at that time. That's why they call it a miracle - had that bomb exploded it would have brought down the whole church and killed everyone inside.

Great shot! You must have pressed yourself to the wall as it is difficult to fit in one frame at that angle.
