The Mosta Parish Church, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady (commonly known as the Rotunda) boasts to be the third-largest unsupported church dome in the world. It was built in the 19th century on designs by the Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vasse` (no relative of mine even if his name is the same as my surname). Grognet’s plans were based on the Pantheon in Rome. On 9th April, 1942, during a bombing raid by the German Luftwaffe a bomb weighing 200Kg pierced the dome (2 others bounced off) and fell among the congregation of more than 300 people. Luckily it did not explode – a replica of this bomb is displayed inside the church under the words ‘Il-miraklu tal-bomba’ (English – ‘The Bomb Miracle’)
@jenrobcarr@chamal@mrssmith@colababy@bill_d@jpgiorgio Thanks. Your comments are very much appreciated. Yes, Jennifer, I agree that God was with them at that time. That's why they call it a miracle - had that bomb exploded it would have brought down the whole church and killed everyone inside.
