This picture shows an internal courtyard with the Monument of Emperor Franz I of Austria. His reign started as Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1792. The empire was however dissolved in 1806 after the disastrous defeat of the Third Coalition by Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Austerlitz. In 1804 he had founded the Austrian Empire and became Francis I of Austria (Franz I), the first Emperor of Austria, ruling from 1804 to 1835.
Behind the statue – with a clock tower – is the renaissance palace called Amalienburg which is one of the many extensions made to the Hofburg along the years. Next to it is the Leopold Wing. This is just a very small part of the Palace which year after year had been extended to accommodate more of the Imperial family.
Agreeing to disagree sounds the way to go!!!
