There are some very impressive artistic treasures in the Church of St Paul Shipwrecked. Among these are the solid silver altar front on the high altar representing the scene of St Paul’s shipwreck and a set of 6 gold and silver statues of the apostles. I have tried to capture them all in this picture – though, I must admit, it hasn’t turned up as well as would have loved - I suspect this was mainly due to the shine of the silver. Behind the high altar, mostly hidden by the candlesticks and the apostles is also a beautiful (400 year-old) painting of St Paul’s shipwreck by the reknown artist Matteo Perez d’Aleccio (1547 – 1616) an Italian painter who studied under Michelangelo and assisted him during the painting of the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.
Thank you so very much for looking and for your lovely comments on my yesterday's posting.
Considering what you had to work with, this pic is great, Dione! I am enjoying all the tidbits of history you are providing with your pics, too! The early apostles had the keys and seeing your pics and reading your post are truly a treasure! Thank you for caring enough to share!
