This is a solid Oak desk I am making myself for my study to replace an older mohagony one. Woodwork is part of my life and it is one of my main hobbies. I have always had a desk job and my tools have always been a pen and paper (until the advent of the computer when the keyboard took over). I have never had any lesson on working wood, never earned a penny out of my hobby and spent a lot of money on DIY tools and material. But I have saved a lot for myself and my children with my work. This pastime has been great in relieving the stress and tensions of my job. Mostt of all it brought me great satisfaction when I see the finished work finished and others admiring the result. I will post pictures of further developments in due time.
Many thanks for looking and for the lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
Ooh, in my books, men who are good with their hands are cool! It's wonderful that you make your own furniture. Awesome shot (and processing) of your oak desk. It'll be great to see it again as the work on it progresses. 8)
Love it . My father in law was a yacht cabinet maker . I did deeply respect him for his craftsmanship and all the beautiful thing he`ve made. I`ve got my love for timber from him. I use timber ( rosewood , ,greenwood, ebony ) for making jewels.
where do i begin.......ist off i must fav! - i love this for so many things - creativity - effect - color tones - all so amazing - now to learn what you love and enjoy!!!!!!! - i am all self taught with my photography - it's weird but in my mind being self taught somehow deminishes the talent in my work - not yours - just mine - but in reading your beautiful words about your wood work - well.....
well Dione you are a man of many talents. This looks very impressive! I feel proud when I put the Ikea desk together but to actually measure and cut the wood takes great talent! Well done!!!
You are quite a craftsman. This looks like quality work. I'm sure it could be a lucrative hobby if you chose but I'll bet you would like to keep these pieces in the family.
My father loved wood-working too, I think for the same reasons as you. He didn't build a lot of furniture, but he did make some lovely pieces (a chest with an inlay of an eagle, an early American design step-stool for my mom, and other things). Your desk looks very sturdy and I'm sure it will be a fine replacement! I really like the way you've processed this- it's a different look altogether.
