Independence from colonial rule was negotiated and clinched for Malta under the governance of the Nationalist Party in 1964. The party is one of two major political formations, the other is the Labour Party.
Every year since 1964, the Nationalist Party has organised its own celebrations separate from those officially done by the government. The celebrations come to a climax at the eve of Independence Day with a mass rally on one of Malta’s biggest open spaces, with a speech by the party leader followed by a concert which lasts well into the night.
The shots in this collage show: the crowd in the 4 shots on the left, the Party Secretary delivering his speech on the right– he is on the rostrum on the right while showing on the big screen to the left, a party supporter with the party flag and one of the entertainers. Pictures taken with the camera hand-held.
