Side view of the main altar and some of the organ pipes (the other pipes are on the other side of the main altar, hidden by the arched column). The cathedral columns and walls are all covered in sculptures of different shapes and patterns. And those are sculptures in the stone and not stuccos pasted on the stone.
After a lot of time wasted in unorganised measures to keep the cathedral in good shape a Foundation was formed up between the Malta Government and the local Catholic Church – the owner and the user of the cathedral respectively – to care for the place. A holistic approach to bring the cathedral to its former glory was started some years ago. This has required millions and millions of Euros to restore this gem of Baroque architecture and the process still has a lot to be done. In the foreground of the picture you can see the sculptures on the side of the columns still waiting to be restored.
Thank you so much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture
Your capture of the astonishing structure is awesome and your detailed information place it perfectly in context. In the current financial times it must be difficult to find the money for that essential work.
Another beautiful shot. It's interesting to me that the government and the church are working to restore it. But it also makes sense because it is not only a place of worship, but a part of your history too.
Great shot of this beautiful church.
We don`t have many baroque in our country. Some Gothic , Most of our churches have no decoration at all They are painted white
