July 20th. The River Arve surges through the centre of this beautiful little town OF Chamonix.
Chamonix, is situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and shares the summit of Mont Blanc with Courmayeur in Italy. It is well known and loved by skiers and by mountain enthusiasts of all types. Mont Blanc, with a summit elevation of 4,810 m (15,781 ft) above sea level, is the third most visited natural site in the world. Chamonix is famous for its spectacular cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m (12,605 ft)). Constructed in 1955, it was then the highest cable car in the world. I was considering a different tour programme just to be able to take this cable car to Aiguille du Midi. I have seen pictures of it and they say the trip is heart-stopping.
In the summer months Chamonix is a mecca for alpine mountaineers and for mountain bikers. The holding of the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix in 1924 further raised its profile as an international tourist destination.
