Posting early because I will not be on the internet during this weekend.
To me bees and hornets are the same. I keep away from both.
thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on my pictures.
It looks like a European honey bee. Hornets are smaller. The difference in Hymenoptera genus "bees" is that honeybees are mostly from apiaries and are far more organized and efficient. The difference that matters to you is that honeybees will not attack unless the individual bee or its hive is endangered. Honeybees can sting only once, then they die because they are the only Hymenoptera to have a barbed stinger. All other "bees" can sting multiple times because their stinger is not barbed.
Thankfully I am not allergic to bee/hornet stings- but having been stung by both I can say this much the hornet stings are far more painful!! I've also been stung by a wasp- and the hornet sting tops them too! However there is a natural remedy, which if you have it nearby works in seconds to take the pain away- Worcestershire sauce! Have a great week end- you've started it with a good shot!
i ask the same question - i always thought the one that make those little individual nests were hornets but aparently we have many kinds of bee here - nice hover and eye!
