Took this shot if St Mary Tower from the ferry on the way to Gozo.
St Mary Tower is on the island of Comino, one of the three main islands in the Maltese archipelago. Comino is half way between Malta and Gozo. Those who have seen the film ‘The Count of Monte Cristo with Gerard Depardieu as the count may remember this tower. It was the location where Monte Cristo was jailed in the Chateau d’If and then, later, thrown over the cliffs tied in a sack.
The actual fortress is situated just off Marseille and was built by Francis I.
Santa Maria tower was built in 1618 for Grant Master Alof de Wignacourt and funds for its construction were primarily raised by the sale of Comino brushwood. The tower formed part of a chain of defensive towers along the coastline of the Maltese Islands. The tower also stopped Turkish corsairs from using the island's creeks as a base from which to harry boats from Gozo.
