21st August. Another collage, this time from among the many shots I took on Bled Island.
Top left: The 99 steps
Right: Christine ringing the church bell from inside the church on Bled Island
Bottom left: The church clock tower
Bottom right: View from the tower.
There are several buildings on the island, the main one being the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, built in its current form near the end of the 17th century. There is a stairway with 99 steps leading from the shore up to the building. The church is frequently visited and weddings are held there regularly. Traditionally it is considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the 99 steps on the day of their wedding and then ring the bell whilst making a wish inside the church. I can assure you that I did not try to carry Christine up these steps, I wouldn’t have, even if the steps were part of a modern escalator. Still, both of us rang the bell for good luck.
The church has a 52 m (171 ft) tower with a wooden staircase up to the top. There are some great view from up there and the bottom right shot is one of several which I took while up there.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
What a great collage would make a wonderful postcard. Sounds like an interesting place. Good job my husband didn't have to carry me up there when we got married we may never have made it to the church!!
