Abruzzo Day 4. 19th April.
Amazing mosaics and golden roof.
This is the crypt of the St Michael the Archangel Sanctuary, where the body of Padre Pio lies and the long corridor leading to it.
The corridor is lined with scenes made of mosaics of marble chippings. On the left, as you go down, are scenes from the life of Francis of Assisi who founded the Franciscan Orders, and parallel to them on the right side are scenes from the life of Padre Pio, showing similarities between the life of the two saints. I was particularly emotionally moved by the scene shown in the bottom right picture – last one in the row – if you enlarge you may view better. The scene shows the saint in an embrace with Christ who is on the cross – as if each One of them is helping the other carry the burden.
The crypt, which is a place of devotion has the ceiling completely decorated in gold - amazing!
Thank you so very much for your great response, comments and the many fav on yesterday’s picture. Makes me enjoy the more sharing with you these shots.
