Two more shots of Fort St Elmo. The fort is built in the form of a star and in the bottom picture you can see one of the points of the star with a gun post right at the tip; yesterday, I showed another. In the upper picture is a line of slots for the musketeers to shoot at any approaching enemy infantry together with openings for the big guns . In front of the building are those large round stone slabs. Those cover rock hewn silos for the storage of grain which, I suppose, would be transported inside the fort in the eventuality of siege.
Joke: Recruits got a shock when their Army basic-training instructor turned out to be an attractive female sergeant. Her assistant, however, was a burly, hawk-nosed veteran whose glare could freeze water. At the end of training, the attractive instructor congratulated the recruits and said that if there was anything she could do for them, they just had to ask. From the back, a voice called out, "How about a kiss from the sergeant?" "Sure," she replied, raising her hand to quell the laughter. "But I'll let my assistant take care of it!"
thank you so much for looking and for the lovely comments on yesterday's picture. 1st April today so be wary in case you become an April's fool.
A huge building and still stands in such obvious good condition! Little did the builders know that the architecture would not be useful more than a decade!
It's really incredible that this beautiful fort, built so long ago, is still standing. Thank you for sharing a part of your world, I find it fascinating!
