Shot taken on the 30th June, the fifth day of our vacation.
This the house of the tanners.
There are many beautiful half-timbered buildings in Strasbourg, especially in the Petite France area which is one of the most beautiful areas in the city. This area was created around the canals of the River Ill and the houses formerly belonged to tanners and slaughterers, who would use the water of the river to clean and prepare the hides of the animals, which would then be laid out to dry on the roofs of the houses.
Petite France comes from the late 1400s when a hospice for those suffering from syphilis was built on the island – the disease at that time was referred to as “French disease.”
Joke: Two blondes are strolling around the narrow streets around Petite France. One notices a compact on the sidewalk and leans down to pick it up. She opens it, looks in the mirror and says, 'Hmm, this person looks familiar.' The second blonde says, 'Here, let me see!' So the first blonde hands her the compact.
The second one looks in the mirror and says, 'You dummy, it's me!'
