This is a merge of 3 shots I took from the strong upper walls of the fort to show the important strategic position guarding the entrance of Malta’s most important harbour (today reserved for yachting and touristic activities). Inside those arcades there are gun positions aimed at the entrance of the harbour. During peace time they were used as stores. Those arcades were for the smaller guns; bigger gun positions are all over the place, especially facing Grand Harbour.
On the opposite side of the harbour entrance is another very strong fort – Fort Ricasoli, also built during the Knights of St John era.
The breakwater was only built in the early 20th century. In earlier times, the entrance to Grand Harbour was protected by a heavy chain which ran across the mouth of the harbour from Fort Saint Elmo to Fort Ricasoli, and which served to keep enemy ships out of harbour. The chain was lowered to the sea bottom during time of peace.
Thank you so much for your continuous support and comments on my pictures. Thank you also for the interest you show in my narratives which I post with which picture.
Wow -- fantastic pano of the harbor and structures!
Thanks for your visit on the red hatted runner who was VERY hard to find -- I knew he was there when I took the shot and couldn't find him for a long time even on the large screen. He's at the base of the tree in the background on the right hand side. Teeeeeny!
Stunning capture, love it.
