I took many shots as my brother and I walked round the walls of the Cittadella. This shot is from the city walls and looks over the lower walls – and first line of defense – and beyond. You can see a small bridge that connects two parts of the lower fortifications. I liked how this came out; don’t ask me how I did it as I don’t remember – I just played around with Photoshop.
The Cittadella lies on one of the highest hills of Gozo and has served the population of the island well for centuries on end as it was the only place where the inhabitants could run for safety from frequent attacks from corsairs. In fact for many years the people of the island (not many) had to sleep within its walls at night day in day out for their own safety.
This is the most recently built part of the city. The southern walls which you see in this picture were completely rebuilt starting from 1599, and they turned the city from a small castle into a gunpowder fortress; the work was complete in 1622. The walls have been restored recently – work is still in progress.
On the other hand, the city's northern walls still retain their original medieval form.
Thank you very much for viewing and for the many lovely comments and the fav's on yesterday's picture and for putting it on tp and pp. So very much appreciated.
Love the curves and lines, great capture and processing.
