Shot taken during our last stop when we went to watch the V18 celebrations.
This is the Triton Fountain which is at the main entrance of Valletta. Valletta is a walled city and has entrances in different parts of its walls. Many people were taking pictures of and with this iconic fountain. The reason is that it had just been inaugurated after months of restoration.
Some information about the fountain.
1. It was created by Maltese sculptor Vincent Apap in 1952
2. The work on the fountain was carried out almost in its entirety during the period 1955-58, under the Malta Labour Party government
3. The fountain was finally completed in 1959, after the fall from power of the Labour Party and while Malta was ruled by a colonial government.
4. It was severely damaged under the Malta Labour Party government during 1978 carnival when the platter carried by the three tritons was foolishly used (with the blessing of the government) as a stage.
5. The fountain was repaired in 1986 under the Nationalist Party government
6. This year in anticipation of the V18 celebrations it was completely restored to its original beauty under a Labour Party government according to plans made during a previous Nationalist Party administration.
