Piazza del Popolo is one of the most famous squares in the north of Rome at the foot of Monte Pincio. The name means "People's Square", but historically it derives from the poplar trees.
The square was built between 1811 and 1822. Although people can see numerous tourists and locals spending a leisurely afternoon in the square, its history is much more depressing. This used to be the primary site for public executions even up to 1826.
This shot was taken on our climb up the hill towards the church of Trinita' dei Monti.
Thank you for your visits, comments and fav's.
A beautiful piazza...you certainly saw far more that I did on your visit...in fact I saw so little over the four days I think we need to return. Love this sense of space & history. You can hardly imagine the terrible things that went on here.
I really love the viewpoint of this picture- it shows how expansive the plaza is. Wow- 1826- it's hard to imagine a public execution taking place at that time! I'm glad that was phased out!
