WELCOME TO ANTWERP (2)

D.ay 6 – Brussels holiday.
An outside view of the main entrance to the Antwerp Terminal Station. Now are you convinced that it looks more like a palace than a train station?
Thank you so much for your views, comments and fav's on yesterday's picture.
Such a wonderful capture of this amazing building Dione, only the bicycles give it away.

It`s one of the high lights of Antwerp
Some of the history :
The stone station building (reception building) was built between 1899 and 1905 by Louis Delacenserie (assisted by Charles Poupaert) in an eclectic style (a combination of style elements from earlier periods). Delacenserie himself spoke of "Baroque-medieval eclecticism". He was inspired by Lucerne's old station building from 1896 and by the Pantheon in Rome . After the foundation stone was laid in 1895, the works progressed so slowly that in Antwerp people began to speak of a "stillekesaan-style station". Gradually the monumental building was erected, with the 75 meter high dome as the highest point . The richly applied symbolism included the Antwerp coat of arms , the Belgian Lion and the initials of King Leopold II. onAugust 11, 1905 the station was opened.
