The SAS ‘Ascension’ window and sculpture celebrates the historic and modern link between Hereford and the SAS.
We loved our visit to Hereford Cathedral on the first stage of our journey home.
I love blue anyway, any time, anywhere, and this just took my breath away.
It was designed by the Royal Academy sculptor, John Maine, 'a modern focus for reflection, pilgrimage and worship in the 1,300-year-old Cathedral'.
We were particularly interested when we saw that John Maine had designed it as he has several sculptures at our local National Trust for Scotland garden at Pitmedden Garden. While Allan worked there John was visiting and they had a chat over a cup of tea in 'the Bothy' and I heard him talk in the evening about his work, all around the world.
'Knowing the Author' makes all the difference to reading a book and knowing the designer certainly added to the delight of our visit to Hereford.
Three good things
1. We also saw the Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library - so fascinating - and I bought a jigsaw of the Mappa Mundi to fill some time when .................
2. Lovely drive to Shrewsbury for our overnight stop and a delicious 'anniversary meal' in a small open-air restaurant.
3. Characters....we have met so many this holiday and the story of our hostess could fill many books - dancer, teacher, director both in the UK and beyond. Lovely lady.
