Approaching Home

A shot from yesterday as we approached home at the end of the long trip. From about 10km away the dogs all suddenly became very alert and were watching out of the windows. I have no idea if they picked up on thoughts or vibes from me, or if they could smell that we were getting near to our big ole salty river, or if they just recognised the scenery from previous trips with Don, but there was no mistaking the difference in their behaviour.

Notice Holly's "High Tech" carrier. Holly has always traveled on my lap on a trip, as Don naturally always drove, and the boys all take up the back seat. I couldn't have her loose on the front seat - once before going to the parlour she went flying into the dashboard when I had to brake suddenly when someone didn't stop at a stop street. I tried purchasing a dog carrier but nothing I could find was really suitable and all were very expensive. So I ended up using my laundry basket with some cushions at the bottom. The basket was held firm onto the seat with a bungee cord around the back of the seat so it had a little bit of elasticity but yet was kept firmly in place with her inside it.
So very cute! I’m sure the dogs picked up on all those things. We got a pet carrier online for Max when he was very little - of course it looked nothing like the photos - even the ones on the packaging! Consequently it went in the garage sale we had a few months ago.

@narayani I bought a pet carrier online as well, but when I unpacked it I realised it wouldn't fit easily on my front seat and I also knew Holly would hate it, so I carefully repacked it into the original packaging and returned it unused. I now have a R1000 credit at Takealot from whom I bought it.

@sdutoit Thanks very much. Would only work for a tiny dog like Holly, but it was perfect for her and she seemed to feel secure in there.

@anniesue Thanks very much. Yes, they obviously sensed home. All three were suddenly alert and looking out the windows long before I had to slow down to enter the town.

In France, dogs are forbidden to be in front seats. Mitzi has a harness which you can attach to the seat belt 'dock' and it was (is?) obligatory. This was some years ago...and I think that that even the Police have better things to do than check dog safety belts! She rides in the back, unbelted.
