I decided to try the Google Maps route home this time instead of taking my usual route that I had worked out by looking at a map book years ago when Don died and I did my first trip alone. It was quite interesting to see new sights, although some of the roads have deteriorated. The Vaal River is a massive river separating the provinces of Free State and Gauteng, formerly called Transvaal for obvious reasons. This particular bridge was so long there were 3 stopping places across it, and I pulled over in the middle one - you can't even see the first pullover place in this photo, it is so far back. I have never before seen this part of the Vaal River, nor been able to stop anywhere near the Vaal river to take any photos. I couldn't believe the size of the fish I was seeing down there
@anniesue Yes it is good to take a different route sometimes, but sadly, these days, after 24 years of ANC mismanagement our once excellent roads are falling apart in provinces other than Western Cape, as I discovered so one takes a chance with the state of the road. There were teams of workers out because it is nearing election time, but it is too little, too late for the roads
@ludwigsdiana Not sure if I will use this route any time soon as there were some stretches of road that were not very good, and it was a slow road to travel. The pot holes in the N12 have been repaired so that is a pleasant road again with a 120km/h speed limit.
