The wonderfully named Clay Pipe Jitty, that connects Swan St and Biggin St in Loughborough.
A Jitty is an East Midlands term for an alleyway, and there are some great alternatives from other parts of the country, including Snicket, Ginnel, Gitty, Passage, Yard, Alley. I am sure that there are more, feel free to add to the list.
Back in the days when Loughborough had it's bus station at the Biggin St end of Clay Pipe Jitty there was a wonderful town map where you could press buttons to light up the location of certain sights in the town.
Both are sadly gone now to be replaced with a shopping centre where several years on units remain empty and we have a large Tesco. After all, Loughborough needed a second Tesco and 4th large supermarket much more than it needed a Bus Station. Sadly an all too familiar story in this country.
At the Swan Street end, was a large Co-Op superstore and Grudgings, an independent store selling cigars, lighters, pipes, tobacco and old fashioned sweets. Both gone now, replaced buy a coffee shop and a Wilkinsons. I regret the loss of Grudgings.
Just about caught up now. Will now spend the next few days posting less shots and catching up with your projects. Before that, I have a rather exciting photo trip tomorrow all being well.....
great shot, nice sign too - the little alleyways like this in Broseley were called jitties too, and were shanty town shacks originally for the miners working in the Telford industries. (We walked them when we went to the Brosely Pipe Museum which was fascinating)
