This morning I ran the 40th running of the New York Mini 10K. This was the first womens's only race in the country, and began at a time when the conventional thinking was that distance running was dangerous for women. Thirty-nine years later, that kind of thinking is inconceivable.
The finishers medal features an image of the late Grete Waitz, who won the New York City Marathon nine times and the Mini five times. She was a New York Road Runners icon, and today's race was dedicated to her memory.
