Elusive kestrel by shepherdman

Elusive kestrel

I spotted an energy-saving kestrel, happily hunting while resting on a telegraph wire, eyes scanning the field below, but without all of that tiring wing fluttering business that usually accompanies a hovering hunting kestrel.. Commanding the dogs to lie down, I walked slowly forwards, but the bird took off, and settled on the wire just a few yards further away. I turned to call the dogs, and discovered them at my heels – as I had crept forward, so had they, tiptoeing just a couple of feet behind me. I commanded them again, more firmly, and walked slowly towards the kestrel, managing a few shots before it flew off across the field. None of the shots were particularly successful.
Loved your commentary about the dogs! Sneaky little guys. Birds are so hard to catch - so easily spooked. If we could just explain to them we just want a picture . . .

Lovely story. They are sooo hard to capture. You did well to get this I think. We seem to have lost the pair in our conservation meadow since buzzards have appeared.
