As promised, a photo taken during our visit to the Northern Lights Wolf Sanctuary, near Golden, British Columbia. After a presentation about the Sanctuary and the wolves role in its natural habitat, we spent some time photographing the wolves, doing our best to make the chain link fencing between us and the wolves disappear. We spent as much time discussing photographic technique, as we did admiring the wolves – the secret was, of course, a small depth of field and a relatively distant wolf.
There is no doubt that the wolves were magnificent beasts, and seemed quite relaxed in their reasonably spacious compounds. We had been told that the chap who established the sanctuary was, in the eyes of the wolves, the leader of the pack. This was clearly demonstrated when the “pack leader” strolled across the area to his house – immediately all of the wolves were alert, and stood up, pacing up and down the fencing closest to where they had seen the Pack Leader. @shepherdmanswife has the same effect on me – a sudden desire to look alert and busy when she gets home.
From one Pack Leader to another - its all in the way you hold your shoulders! - back with your head up! Looking at the profile, its not really like a dog! Good to see them so close!
Excellent shot Shepherdman, I am glad to hear there are sanctuaries for wolfs, to me they are misteric animals and it makes me sad to know that they are still get killed by humans.
Very nice detail. One night, many years ago, a pack of wolves slunk through out campsite very late at night as we watched a meteor shower. Magic beyond words! I love your wolf!
How interesting to see this animal up close. Is it a young wolf? I imagined the coloring would be different. I had to chuckle about your pack leader comment! Ha ha!
