For many months the company that owns the quarry near to our home have promised to open up a footpath route that circumnavigates the quarry. The previous choice of routes around the quarry were circular, but still tended to be a “there and back” option, even if one walked along the top by the quarry edge, and returned back along the bottom of the hill. This morning I discovered that the new route was, crossing the river by a new bridge to a new field path, and returning home via Croft village. Part of the route is a tad industrial, passing between a railway and the quarry buildings, the path bounded by steel fencing. Nevertheless it is a nice alternative route to the familiar ones, especially since, if we follow it in a clockwise direction, after 4 miles, with just half a mile to go, we pass the Heathcote Arms pub.
